We once filmed a scene where the main character stabs her boyfriend. My husband created a really simple special effect. He made fake blood with light corn syrup, red food coloring, a little blue food coloring, and soap. The soap is there so that the blood will wash out. He filled a condom with the blood, nestled it in a tub of plain gelatin and let it set. Then we put a white shirt over the pan of gelatin. We stabbed through the white shirt into the pan of gelatin and let the blood all ooze out onto the shirt. It was so cool!!! And it looked pretty real too.

Not only was it fun but the actor did not get dirty at all. We gave him a clean white shirt for the beginning of the scene and a bloody shirt for the end of the scene. Okay, so he did get dirty. But he did not get stabbed. And that counts for something, don’t you think?
download Rush Hour 2 In the final film you see the guy and then the close up of the woman stabbing him, then his reaction and her reaction and then you see him covered in blood as he dies his sad death. It looks great. There are so many ways to add production value without too much hassle or expense.
